Chapter 13 to end page 289

What do you think Peekay means on page 279, when he says that the photograph captured the moment when he understood that racism was a primary force of evil?

Why was Captain Smit afraid of having evidence of a photograph with he and a black man together? Why do you think he asked Geel piet to be in the photo if he would later ask for it to be destroyed?

The men and the boys on the boxing squad clearly recognise Geel Piet's abilities as a coach. Do you think they could openly admit that they thought he was as good or even better than they were at understanding boxing? Why?

  1. Peekay means that he understands that certain races couldn't be caught together because the white people are at the top and have a lot more respect and it would be shameful if someone who is white had a photo with someone who is black would be shameful because the black people are at the bottom of the list and they don't have a lot of respect.
Captain Smit was afraid because his type (the white people) wasn't supposed to be with black people because they were coincided people who worked for the white people and the white people weren't meant to be with the black people unless if they were giving orders to them or if they were being nasty to them and because he wasn't doing neither and they would of called him names like Kaffir lover and things like that.
I don't think that they could admit that Geel Piet was a good coach and possibly better than them because they all think that their better that Geel Piet but they just don't want to because it would be embarrassing for them having to admit or they just don't want Geel Piet to rub it in their faces and using it as an excuse for them to listen to him.

  2. I think that he saw the way that Klipkop stepped out of the photo and said, “ No way, man! I’m not having my photo taken with a blerrie kaffir.” (Pg 279) I think that Peekay realized that Kilpkop was being racist. I think that the fact that he was being racist to someone that Peekay looked up to made it much more clear to Peekay how people treated others just because they had different colored skin.

I think he was afraid of being in a photo with a black man because he thought people would see it and look at him in a different way. I think that if people weren’t judged by the colour of their skin he would quite happily have kept the photo, but people are racist and do judge people by the colour of their skin.
I think the reason that Captain Smit asked Geel Piet to be in the photo because he didn’t want Peekay to see him being racist. I think that Captain Smit doesn’t want Peekay to grow up and act like everyone he is around because he knows want racism is like and nobody should have to go through it.

I think that they would say he is a good coach because he taught them to carefully think about what they were about to do rather than just rush straight in and start throwing punches in every direction. I think that Geel Piet talked to them in a way that they understood. He would tell them things like dance with your feet, this meant a lot to Peekay as he was a lot smaller than the other boys and although Peekay was small he could run around and around until the other boxer was to tired to continue.

  3. 1.Peekay understood the racism in the prison that he never knew of and saw how evil it was.

2.Captain Smit was afraid of the evidence with him and a black man because he knew he would not get promoted if it was ever found. He took the picture even if he was going to destroy it because he didn’t really despise Geel Piet.

3.No I don't think that they would openly admit it because they thought the black man was lower than them and they don’t want to make out like he was as good as them.
