Chapter 11 end of page 244

In this chapter, the author starts to delve into the plight of the African prisoners. Are they treated fairly or humanely (despite being criminals)?
Write a comment about this. What do you think?
Why do you think that Doc, Peekay's grandfather and Mrs Boxhall work to try and make the lives of these prisoners easier?

  1. They are treated more humanely than fairly. They beat them up just because they can and they treat them like slaves.
I think that, that shouldn’t have been aloud and if I was a prison keeper person, even thought they were prisoners and they may have done things wrong but there is no reason to beat them and treat them humanely.
I do think that those people do try and make the prisoners life easy and less hard. Their work also helped them pull through.

  2. I think that the men in the prison are treated fairly as far as prisoners go. All though there are some that do get treated unfairly (example) when one of the sergeants thought that the tea maker had eaten all the biscuits so he got smacked over the head, but it was actually one of the other sergeants in the prison.

  3. I don’t believe that they are treated fairly. There is a perfect example on page 196. This was when the warder lifted the African off his feet and gave him a huge swipe across the face. I think that the way the people in the prison get treated is cruel and no one, whether or not they are a criminal should be treated in the way that these men are.

I think that in a way they do try to make their lives easier. I think that they also try to make their families life easier because they have no food of fresh water. When the families are able to contact their family members in the prison I think it gives them some peace of mind just to know that their husbands are still alive.

  4. 2. Because they think that it is unfair on the prisoners that well there in the prison getting their food given to them. Well there family’s are out trying hard to get money, and trying not to starve to death. They think that that is unfair so they want to help them and let them know that there family’s are still alive and that is what gives them hope.

  5. The prisoners are treated fairly which is not right because they've done things that are wrong and some of them have better lives in prison because of the way they get treated and then they'd carry on doing wrong things so they can go back to prison.
I think that Doc, Peekay's grandfather and Mrs Boxhall are trying to make the prisoners lives easier because they either are going to do something that is going to send them to jail or their trying to let Doc have an easier life so Peekay can be friends and Peekay can have a good education and they are trying to protect Peekay from seeing horrible things.

  6. I think that the teaching he is getting provided is all very different but from the ways he is getting taught BOXING is the only thing on his mind. Peekay begins to start a bad habit of disrespecting the beliefs of his mother to chase his dreams.
I think that you can’t get little kids to always want to do the same as you; most kids want to follow their hearts.

  7. They are not really treated humanely but it is not njust because they are criminals it is because they bare black.
They work to make the prisoners lives easier because they know the prisoners are not all bad and have just made a mistake.

  8. I am not sure that I agree with you Nikiian. I think the boo is pretty clear about how poorly the African prisoners are treated. Yes, many of them are criminals and had done bad things, but did they deserve to be beaten and have no contact with their families?
