Peekay's Train Journey

A lot changes for Peekay in the short time between leaving the school with Mevrou and walking to Harry Crown's shop and then catching the train. He meets Hoppie and many other people.
Write a statement about what Peekay learns on his journey and about how his life changes in this short period of time.
Think critically about your statement and go beyond the literal statements in the book.

  1. I think Peekay has learnt many things that 6 year old children these days don’t normally know. He has had a very rough time lately with being pissed on, being beaten up, and all Hoppie does is remind Peekay to have faith in himself. Hoppie tells Peekay his secret to how he wins most of his boxing matches. The saying ‘first with the head then with the heart, that’s how a man stays ahead from the start.’ means a lot to Hoppie. This saying applies to life as well as it does boxing and I think Peekay will soon realise that.

  2. I think that Peekay learns alot abot life and that no six year old this day would have to put up with. Hoppie teaches Peekay that you need to think with your head and your heart to achive your dreams. Peekay now knows that life is only as good as you make it.

  3. I think that Peekay has learnt a lot on his travel with Hoppie on his train ride. He has had a hard time lately getting peed on, beaten up and getting made to eat poo. When Hoppie tells Peekay his secret when he is boxing “the head first and then the heart” Peekay feels like he has a friend to trust. this sayiing will get to Peekay as it does applies to boxing and the way of life. Another saying in the stroy that I've picked up is that the bigger man doesn't always have to win and sometimes the smaller man can win against the bigger man.

  4. Peekay being a six year old has learnt lots of things that six year olds don’t really learn about and he is tough having to put up with being peed on and getting beaten up, hoppie tells him to think with your heart and brains and your dreams will be successful and that little can defeat the big. For such a little kid he has been through some really tough times.

  5. I think that Peekay has learnt more than we all probably did when we where about 5 and 6 even though he has had such a rough time with getting peed on, having the top of his ear sliced and getting pushed around. He has learnt to put faith in his self and that to win is to use your mind and your heart to win.

  6. Peekay has learnt a lot going more than most 6 yearolds would. Like being bullied and made to eat poo. When he was on the train hoppie told him to have faith in himself and not to give up. He tells him to follow his dream if he wants to be a boxer.

  7. Peekay has learnt a lot being a 6 year old boy because a normal 6 year old boy would play with his toy cars and do things like that but Peekay is different. Instead of playing with toy cars he's got to worry about people picking on him and peeing on him. A normal 6 year old will not worry about these things and that's what makes him so special because he's experiencing things that not a lot of people would experience until their teenagers. Peekay would learn a lot of lifelong skills that would make him stronger for harder challenges that he will experience in his lifetime.
